The Russian occupiers have already lost 100 heavy flamethrower systems since the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by the General Staff of Ukraine.
So, this list includes the well-known TOS-1 "Buratino", TOS-1A "Solntsepek" systems, as well as the newer TOS-2 "Tosochka" on a wheeled chassis.
"What heavy flamethrower systems do the Russian invaders have? These are "Buratino" TOS-, the first version, "Solntsepёk" TOS-1A modernized, "Tosochka" TOS-2 on a wheeled chassis," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine explained.
TOS "Solntsepek" is a Russian heavy flamethrower multiple launch rocket system of 220 mm caliber, adopted into service in 2001. The complex includes: a combat vehicle with a launcher based on a tank, two transport and loading vehicles, unguided rockets. The system is designed to destroy enemy manpower, fortifications and light equipment with thermobaric charges.
TOS-1 "Buratino" is a Soviet heavy flamethrower multiple launch rocket system of 220 mm caliber on the chassis of the T-72 tank. Armed with 30 unguided thermobaric rockets, it is designed to destroy enemy personnel, equipment and fortifications at a distance of up to 3.5 km.
First used in Afghanistan, then in Chechnya, Syria and Ukraine. Due to its extreme destructiveness and the area of destruction, the use of the "Buratino" may constitute a violation of humanitarian law.
Russia boasted back in 2023 that it had begun using its modernized TOS-2 "Tosochka" on the battlefield, and a Ukrainian drone first recorded this vehicle on the battlefield a year ago.
"TOS-2 "Tosochka" is a further development of heavy flamethrower systems of the TOS type, which the Russian Federation uses on the battlefield in Ukraine – TOS-1 "Buratino/TOS-1A "Solntsepёk".
Moreover, the TOS-2 Tosochka system was first demonstrated in Russia at the Kavkaz exercises in 2020.
Also, in 2024, for propaganda purposes, a public demonstration of the new flamethrower system on a caterpillar track TOS-3 "Dragon" was held, the development of which is being carried out by "Omsktransmash". The further fate of this TOS is unknown.
