Ukraine cripples Russian radars and aircraft, paving way for stronger strikes on Crimean Bridge

The Ukrainian Defence Forces are systematically destroying Russian radar systems in illegally annexed Crimea, clearing the way for more powerful weapons.

On September 21, 2025, Ukrainian special forces unit Prymary struck two Russian Be-12 Chaika anti-submarine amphibious aircraft in occupied Crimea — the first such attack in history.

Aviation expert and analyst Kostiantyn Kryvolap told Espreso that the Defense Forces are eliminating Russian radar systems, paving the way for more powerful strikes.

He explained that the Be-12, developed in the 1960s, was designed for anti-submarine warfare. Out of more than 160 aircraft built, Russia inherited about 50–60 after the collapse of the USSR, but only 4–6 remained in service. These planes, supported by helicopters dropping buoys, could track underwater activity and monitor the Black Sea.

According to Kryvolap, Ukraine’s recent strikes, including the destruction of a Nebo-U radar system and earlier SBU operations against S-400 and S-500 radars, are leaving Russia “without eyes.” He estimated that Ukraine has destroyed a third to half of Russia’s remaining Be-12 fleet.

“Now the Russians in Crimea almost have no detection capabilities, which means Ukraine can strike with far more serious weapons. After eliminating these aircraft and radar systems, our forces are not just cutting a path to Crimea — they’re paving a highway,” Kryvolap stressed. Under these circumstances, it will also be easy to destroy the Crimean bridge.

Recall, recently, Ukraine unveiled its TOLOKA underwater drone at the Defense Tech Valley 2025 exhibition in Lviv.

Although the platform has been known for about a year, it has only now been publicly displayed. The system features three variants capable of striking targets up to 2,000 kilometers away.

The compact TLK-150 is designed for stealth operations just below the surface, using electric propulsion to evade detection and penetrate Russian defenses, according to Defense Express. The unveiling comes amid Kyiv’s focus on precision strikes against Russian infrastructure, especially on Crimean bridge. In June, the Security Service of Ukraine carried out its third attack on the Crimean Bridge, a critical supply and transport route for Russian forces to the occupied Ukrainian territories.

While the exact cause of damage to the bridge’s underwater supports remains unclear, some defense experts speculate that the TOLOKA drone may have played a role.

Since 2022, Ukraine has steadily expanded its naval drone fleet, integrating unmanned maritime systems into combat operations.
