Russian military command is increasingly concerned that fighting in the Sumy region could shift from populated areas into dense forest zones, where terrain and heavy vegetation sharply limit the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. This assessment was shared by sources within Russian security agencies.
According to the source, Russia is closely watching the risk that combat operations may move northwest of the city of Sumy, into wooded areas cut through by deep ravines. Such terrain, the source explained, would significantly complicate Russia’s attack posture, which is why Russian intelligence services are paying heightened attention to developments in the area.
The forests pose a particular problem for Russian forces because they undermine one of their main tactical advantages. In thick woodland, the Armed Forces of Russia would lose the ability to deploy drones on a large scale.
At the same time, artillery remains a decisive factor on the battlefield, with Ukrainian forces operating it far more effectively. Heavy armor also plays a critical role.
The source added that if Ukrainian units manage to entrench themselves in the forested areas by late spring, Russian attempts to retake lost positions under dense foliage would be close to impossible.
Recall, Russian forces have been increasing the size of their grouping in Sumy Oblast each month since at least autumn 2025 and are moving towards a large dense forest northwest of the city of Sumy. The main area of the advance remains the Russian-held area between the villages of Oleksiivka, Yablunivka and Yunakivka. From there, Russian forces are advancing along three routes towards Khotin, Pysarivka and Nova Sich.
A second, less visible, area of advance is the village of Myropillia. Over the past few months, Russia has occupied around a dozen small border villages in Sumy Oblast and is now pushing further towards three settlements that are crucial for the logistics of Ukraine’s defence forces.
In this case, Viktor Tregubov, Head of the Communications for the Joint Forces Group, said that Russian invading forces have not achieved significant progress in the Sumy region, despite attempts by some groups to infiltrate. “Russians have entrenched themselves there and are trying to advance, , I was already asked about information from DeepState claiming they had made significant progress – I checked it, and no, they have not made major gains,” Tregubov said.
According to him, some Russian groups attempted to infiltrate toward the settlement of Riasne.
“Separate groups tried to move toward Riasne. Riasne is the settlement immediately beyond Hrabovske,” Tregubov explained.
He emphasized that these attempts were unsuccessful.
“Some groups tried to penetrate there and carry out infiltration actions. Without success,” he stressed.
At the same time, he confirmed the presence of Russian troops directly in Hrabovske.
“In Hrabovske itself, the Russians are present, and that is, of course, an unpleasant situation,” the Joint Forces representative concluded. 7th Corps of Ukraine’s Airborne Assault Forces said that Russian forces are attempting to create a beachhead for new offensive operations in Ukraine’s northeast, potentially setting the stage for an advance toward the city of Sumy. Sumy, home to about 250,000 residents, has been a regular target of Russian shelling and aerial strikes but has never been occupied by Russia.
Russian forces currently hold a handful of settlements in parts of Sumy Oblast, primarily in the northern part of the region, adjacent to Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
