Ukrainian long-range drones can now strike at depths of 1,600 kilometers within Russian territory , covering a quarter of the country’s territory. According to Bloomberg , Ukrainian drones now regularly strike targets deep within Russia, reaching the Ural Mountains and populated areas where most people considered war a distant concern. On April 25, a multi-story residential building was struck in Yekaterinburg—the first damage to the city since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Since the beginning of April, authorities have temporarily suspended operations at the local airport five times in response to drone threats. "It was a shock. Although no one was killed, people finally realized the city was no longer deep in the rear," said Vladimir, a Yekaterinburg resident. The publication notes that this strike has symbolic significance for Yekaterinburg, which was previously considered beyond the war’s reach. The city is located on the eastern side of the Urals, approximately 1,700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and during World War II served as a rear base, where factories were relocated for security reasons, as the city was considered beyond the range of attacks from Europe. Bloomberg emphasizes that as the war on the front lines has reached a stalemate, drones are playing an increasingly important role. Both sides are now striking each other’s cities with hundreds of drones daily. Meanwhile, Ukraine is becoming increasingly effective in its campaign, targeting Russian oil refineries, fertilizer plants and ports used for energy exports, cutting into the Kremlin’s revenue and limiting its ability to profit from higher prices caused by the Middle East conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv plans to expand its long-range strikes. He stated that Ukraine is now capable of striking Russia from a distance of over 1,500 kilometers. "This makes a quarter of Russian territory – where more than 70% of the population lives – accessible to Ukrainian drones." Ukraine also attacked several Su-57 and Su-34 aircraft at the Russian Shagol airbase in the Chelyabinsk region. The region is located in the southern Urals, near the border with Kazakhstan, and is approximately 1,500-1,700 kilometers from Ukraine. Chelyabinsk remains an important center for Russia’s metallurgical, military, and aerospace industries. However, according to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the city has been regularly attacked by Ukrainian drones since early April. Last week, drones also caused a fire and damaged a primary processing unit at Lukoil’s Permneftegaz-Inzhenerny Zavod oil refinery in the Perm region, another Ural region, approximately 1,500 kilometers from the border. On the night of May 5, a missile alert was issued in at least 18 regions of the Russian Federation . For the first time, a missile alert was issued 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border – in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Russian Telegram channels report that the VNIIR-Progress military plant in Cheboksary, the capital of Chuvashia, has been hit. This enterprise produces Kometa antennas for the Russian army, which protect drones from Ukrainian electronic warfare systems. An FP-5 Flamingo cruise missile "dropped" on the plant. Also under attack was one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, Kirishinefteorgsintez, in the Leningrad region.
