The US is opening a new chapter in arms supplies to Ukraine: last month, the American side approved the sale of up to 3,350 ERAM cruise missiles to Kyiv for Ukrainian combat aviation According to Aviationweek , the first 10 of the mentioned missiles will arrive on Ukrainian territory in October, but mass deliveries will only begin next year. The development and production of ERAM is an example of the Pentagon’s new policy of "quick procurement." The contract for the missiles was published only a year ago, a record-breaking short cycle for the American defense industry. According to documents obtained by journalists, 840 ERAM modules are planned to be delivered by the end of October 2026, which are being developed in parallel by CoAspire and Zone 5 Technologie.
The ERAM missiles, weighing about 227 kg, are adapted not only to F-16 fighters, but also to the Soviet MiG-29s in service with Ukraine. With a range of up to 400 km and a speed of about 0.6 Mach, they have a relatively small warhead, but their main advantage is their versatility and the ability to quickly deploy both on American and Soviet aircraft.
Earlier, media reported that the deal for ERAM supplies should amount to $850 million, and it will be covered mainly by funds from Kiev’s European allies.
The US Department of Defense has been blocking the use of ATACMS missiles by the Ukrainian Defense Forces to strike targets in Russia for several months. According to sources, Kyiv has not received permission for such attacks since late spring. However, the sale of Extended Range Attack Missiles or ERAM to Kyiv has been approved.
U.S. officials have clarified that while Ukraine has a limited supply of ATACMS, their use outside its own territory is only possible with special approval. In one case, Kyiv tried to use the weapon against a target in Russia, but the request was denied. The decision to launch each strike is made by Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, in accordance with White House policy. The mechanism also applies to other long-range systems, including the British Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which rely on American intelligence.
