During Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine captured numerous Russian occupiers. In particular, The Wall Street Journal reported on the case of former Russian prisoner Vyacheslav Kudryashev, who was captured by Ukrainian forces.

Journalists note that the captor is now missing part of his right arm and has two titanium plates installed in his head.

As the occupier himself recounted, the commander sent him and another infantryman to reach a specific point in the forest near Kreminna, in eastern Ukraine. Their goal was to hold out long enough for others to join them and advance the Russian front line a few dozen meters further. Things didn’t go according to plan. Kudryashev lost his radio while trying to evade Ukrainian drones. Unsure of his location and unable to contact his unit, he remained there with his comrade until Ukrainian fighters found them and captured them. "The Ukrainians could have killed us right there – no one would have known we were dead," said Kudryashev, who is currently in a Ukrainian prison camp, where he gave an interview to The Wall Street Journal.

As journalists note, Kudryashev was at the front for only four days, which testifies to the tactics Russia is using to achieve minor successes on the battlefield in Ukraine.

"Faced with thousands of Ukrainian drones that detect and target nearly everything moving along the front line, Russia has largely abandoned attempts to advance with armored vehicles. Instead, it employs a tactic known as ‘infiltration,’ sending pairs of infantrymen on often hopeless forays into the gray zone, where neither side has effective control and the infantry of both armies struggles to survive," the WSJ emphasizes.

This year, this tactic has helped achieve small gains – about 7 square kilometers per day. Kudryashev, a former drug addict who was imprisoned on drug trafficking charges, also said he and many in the Russian military see the war as a deliberate campaign to purge society of those at the lowest rungs of the social ladder, targeting the oppressed, the homeless, and prisoners.

"They skimp on equipment, but in return they lose men. This approach is yielding diminishing returns. Furthermore, much of the territory gained through these tactics becomes a gray zone they don’t fully control," noted Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The expert also warned that with the onset of late spring, it will become more difficult for Ukraine to detect Russian occupiers among the green vegetation, meaning that infiltration will likely remain an important element of Russia’s future summer offensive.

Kofman added that the soldiers sent on sabotage missions are usually ex-convicts with only a few days of training, as minimal skills are required to reach the designated location and await further orders. However, some of them ignore their commanders’ orders, trying to maximize their chances of survival.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Chernyak, an officer with the Rubezh Brigade, spoke about the real situation on the front . He noted that the occupiers are changing their tactics and increasingly using other tools to influence Ukrainian soldiers.

"To say that the Russians’ offensive pace has slowed in our direction would be inaccurate, as they are constantly changing tactics and constantly bringing in new resources," Chernyak said.
