Ukrainian fighter pilots flying the French Mirage 2000 have reported a 98% success rate in intercepting Russian drones and missiles, underlining both the aircraft’s effectiveness and the need for further Western military support. At the same time, Russian logistics and other ground targets are also being successfully destroyed.
In this case Ukrainian Mirage 2000 fighter jets have begun destroying airborne targets using high-precision French MICA missiles, according to the "Military" newspaper , citing the charity Volyn SOS. The Volyn SOS Foundation posted a photograph online of a Ukrainian Mirage 2000, which, according to "Military," is equipped with MICA missiles. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have not yet officially commented on this information. Kyiv has previously not officially disclosed the air-to-air missile armament of the Mirage fighters that the Ukrainian Armed Forces received in 2025.
In 2025, Ukrainian media reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could equip Mirage 2000s with French MICA missiles. These are the primary air-to-air missiles of these French fighters. It was claimed that Paris could transfer upgraded MICA-NG missiles with a range of over 110 km to Kyiv. The French Army adopted MICA air-to-air missiles in 1998 for the Mirage 2000 and Rafale. Initially, these were the MICA-IR and MICA-EM variants, which differ in their guidance systems. Since then, these air-to-air missiles have been upgraded several times. The most modern version is the MICA-NG. Older versions of the MICA have a range of up to 20 km, while the modern MICA-NG has a range of approximately 110 km. It can fly at altitudes up to 9 km. The missile is 3,100 mm long, 160 mm in diameter, and has a wingspan of 560 mm. The missile weighs 112 kg, of which 19 kg is the warhead. The MICA-IR has a bispectral thermal imaging seeker, while the MICA-EM uses an AD4A active pulse-Doppler seeker. The MICA-NG uses an active, jam-resistant seeker capable of detecting targets with a radar cross-section of 3 square meters at a range of up to 40 km and 0.1 square meters at a range of up to 15 km. As a reminder, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ receipt of French Mirage 2000 fighter jets was officially announced in 2024. In early 2025, it was announced that the first French fighter jets had already arrived in Ukraine. At the time, it was reported that they were equipped with SCALP air-to-surface missiles.
Earlier, French defence procurement agency (DGA) and the French Air Force successfully fired two MICA IR missiles from a Rafale and a Mirage 2000 against balloons at altitudes of over 20 km. These unprecedented tests, carried out from Cazaux air base, with the support of French Space Agency CNES, Dassault Aviation and MBDA, demonstrated the feasibility of neutralising this new type of threat, in an increasingly contested area of conflict. MBDA’s role in this operation demonstrates its reactivity in meeting the evolving needs of the French armed forces, as well as its expertise in protecting sovereign territory.
