Russian troops are concentrating their forces on the southern outskirts of Myrnohrad in Donetsk region, using residential areas as natural cover. This was stated by Vladimir Polevoy, Chief of Communications for the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Airborne Assault Forces, on Radio Donbass.Realities . "The enemy truly has an advantage now within the residential areas of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. This primarily provides them with cover," he noted.
According to the speaker, the difficulty of the attacks is due to the fact that the operation of conventional tactical FPVs is hampered by buildings: "The high-rises of Mirnohrad and Pokrovsk are like mountains, like a forest that stands in front of Russian logistics and covers their radio horizon."
Polevoy claims that attempts to peer beyond these high-rise buildings using repeaters or reconnaissance aircraft, he says, are hampered by the active operation of Russian air defenses. Even new fiber-optic drones are becoming less effective in the city. He noted that in densely populated areas, the cable simply lies on the ground, bends, or breaks on the sharp corners of buildings that "stick out like teeth." Despite these technological limitations, the speaker assured that the south of Myrnohrad is not a complete "blind spot." "Defeats do occur there, but the complexity of the urban terrain and the command’s priorities now make this area one of the most challenging for drone operations," he added. The large agglomeration of industrial cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in the Donetsk region is one of the main targets of the Russian offensive. Russia has concentrated its largest and most powerful force here. Late last year, the Kremlin declared the complete occupation of these cities. In reality, this is not the case. As early as the late summer of 2024, Russian troops approached the outskirts of these settlements. But Ukraine deployed reserves, strengthened its defenses, and was able to prevent the rapid collapse of the agglomeration.
Active fighting on this section of the front has been ongoing for a year and a half. The situation escalated to its peak in early autumn 2025, when Russian troops were able to overcome Ukrainian Armed Forces defenses in the southern Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad agglomeration and enter residential areas. On December 1, the Kremlin announced the capture of Pokrovsk, and just before the New Year, it declared full control of Myrnohrad. The Ukrainian authorities deny this. The military-political leadership insists that the Ukrainian Armed Forces still control certain areas of these cities, and there is no talk of encircling or capturing the agglomeration. OSINT analysts also note the lack of reliable data on Russia’s full control over these towns. However, researchers acknowledge that parts of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad have long been in a "gray zone," where neither side has exercised stable control. As for the Russian group, the 51st and 2nd Armies of the Russian Federation carried out the tasks there. But at a certain point, they lost their effectiveness due to losses. After that, the operational-strategic reserve from the 76th Airborne Division was brought in.
