Nationwide internet blackouts and limitations imposed on some social media platforms in Russia, are causing growing discontent among the public. Residents take to social media platforms to express their frustration and disappointment with internet clampdown, describing how negatively their lives have been affected by these restrictions. “Turns out we have a new restriction. That we have limits on the internet and everything else. What’s the point of such sacrifices if everything will be shut down soon anyway,” one user posted on X social media platform. “Everyone is hurting, everyone feels bad, but everyone stays quiet. Why is everyone silent” she asked as she broke into tears. Another user expressed fury at limitations to the internet across Russian regions in a video address posted on X. The users said she was only able to access mobile internet after crossing the border to Abkhazia in the South Caucasus region. Another video shows an interview among Russians who complain about limitations to mobile internet. The frustrated residents explained that they didn’t know what purpose internet blackouts serve. One man said he believed the clampdown on the internet was a harbinger of a more serious threat. Over the past few months, users all over Russia have experienced recurring and widespread mobile internet outages. Yet these interruptions largely went unnoticed by the broader public, unlike the current connectivity problems affecting Moscow’s central districts, which serve as the country’s primary political and economic core. Residents in the heart of Moscow and in St. Petersburg began noticing problems with their mobile internet roughly a week ago. Numerous users reported that websites and apps failed to load, and some experienced a complete loss of connectivity, preventing them from making even basic phone calls. Authorities in the Kremlin stated earlier this week that the disruptions were being implemented to “maintain security” and would continue “for as long as additional measures are needed.” The government, however, did not elaborate on the specific circumstances or threats prompting these restrictions.
