NATO’s chief on Thursday said he had held positive discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump on the future of Greenland as well as on Arctic security.
According to Associated Press Secretary-General Mark Rutte’s comments came during an early morning panel at the Davos Forum in Switzerland in which he stressed the need to limit Chinese and Russian influence on the Arctic generally, and Greenland specifically.
He said that NATO members must "make sure when it comes to Greenland, particularly, that we ensure that the Chinese and Russians will not gain access to the Greenland economy to.. militarily, to Greenland."
Europe was breathing a sigh of relief Thursday following a dramatic reversal by U.S. President Donald Trump over Greenland the day before at the World Economic Forum where he scrapped the tariffs that he threatened to impose on eight European nations to press for U.S. control over Greenland.
Trump said there is a new framework with NATO on Arctic security without the U.S. using force to take over Greenland.
Still, there were many unanswered questions about what the Greenland deal means.
