As reported Putin met with Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and congratulated him on the "integration of the Euphrates region," a region previously home to a Russian military base. Social media users are reacting sarcastically to the statement, noting Putin’s comical attempt to cover up Russia’s monumental failure in the Middle East. He stated that Moscow has always advocated for "restoring Syria’s territorial integrity," but these words conceal a reality that is unpleasant for the Kremlin. Russians, as well as some Z-bloggers, are outraged by Putin’s words. For years, Moscow supported the Assad regime with money and military force , but it collapsed within weeks. Assad himself fled to Russia. The city of Qamyshly, located in the Euphrates region, has housed a Russian military airfield since 2019. According to Reuters, Russia began withdrawing its troops from this base in late January. Sources report that after the province of Hasakah came under Damascus’ control, the Syrian authorities made it clear that the Russian contingent was no longer welcome there. "The Russians will be asked to leave Kamyshly completely. Now they have nothing to do there," Kommersant quoted a source as saying. In fact, Moscow is losing yet another stronghold in the Middle East without a fight, without negotiations, without compensation. The Russian army entered Syria in 2015 under the slogans of "fighting terrorism" and "defending an ally." Since then, hundreds of Russian soldiers have been killed, tens of billions of dollars have been spent, and cities have been destroyed. And now, almost ten years later, Moscow is losing one of its key bases, and the president is merely congratulating the Syrian authorities on their "integration," netizens comment on Putin’s statement. Media previously reported that Syria rejected Russia’s terms of "friendship." Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani stated in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat that " all agreements with Russia concluded under the previous regime have been suspended and are unacceptable, and no new ones have been signed yet ." He added that the current authorities intend to review all documents signed during the Bashar al-Assad era and abandon the practice of external pressure disguised as allied rhetoric. The diplomat emphasized that discussions with the Russian side are ongoing, but Syria’s position remains fundamental: any agreement must be in the interests of the Syrian people. " We are not going to make concessions that could limit the rights of the Syrians ," al-Shibani added. During Ahmed al-Shaar’s visit to Moscow, the fate of former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia after his overthrow in December 2024, was also discussed. According to sources, this issue has become one of the most sensitive in the negotiations: the Syrian authorities demand non-interference in the country’s internal affairs and the refrain from using the "Assad factor" to pressure Damascus. The Kremlin faces a new setback in the Middle East. After losing influence in Africa and weakening its position in Central Asia, Moscow now risks losing its last strategic foothold in the region, which it has used for years for military operations and political pressure.
