1 seriously injured in overnight Wake County deputy-involved shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — An armed man who fired at deputies early Tuesday morning was struck by returning fire, according to the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to respond at 1:50 a.m. to the 200 block of Benar Drive, just outside of Raleigh. When an initial call was made to dispatch law enforcement there, a caller reported an adult male was threatening to harm himself, a sheriff’s office statement said.

Deputies encountered a man on scene with a gun who “discharged the firearm at them.” During the course of the gunfire aimed at deputies, the sheriff’s office said multiple deputies shot back.

That man was seriously injured after being struck by the gunfire and was transported to a nearby hospital by Wake County EMS. As is standard protocol anytime a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called to step in.

“We have asked the SBI to lead an independent investigation, and at the same time our office will be conducting an internal investigation and review,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said.

As the investigation into this deputy-involved shooting proceeds, the SBI and Wake County District Attorney’s Office will make any new details available.
