NEW YORK (PIX11) — While tenants battled the extreme heat, there was a major disruption to elevator service in dozens of NYCHA developments across the city.
From the Upper East Side to the Bronx, city officials say the outages were caused by a “power surge.”
Keith Grossman, the Executive Vice President of Operations Support Services at NYCHA, tells PIX11 News that starting on Monday, there were a number of voltage reductions. More than 50 NYCHA developments’ elevator services were impacted.
There was a pocket of six developments on the Upper East Side and East Harlem impacted after 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
There were elevator disruptions at Stanley Isaac’s and Holmes Towers, Carver Houses, Washington Houses, Wilson Houses, Metro North Houses, and the East River Houses.
Grossman says NYCHA sent elevator mechanic teams and stair climbers to help immediately.
PIX11 News reached out to Con Edison and is waiting to hear back.
Meanwhile, a NYCHA spokesperson tells PIX11 News:
“Yesterday, a Con Ed low-voltage condition impacted NYCHA developments, and they have informed us that it is now resolved. NYCHA has been working around the clock to safely restore elevator service and address all other impacts to residents. Additionally, NYCHA staff are actively coordinating with partner agencies and communicating with resident leadership at affected developments.”
