Backyard chickens trucked 3,300km to Top End | ABC NEWS

Almost 2,000 chickens have crossed the road — or, in this case, the border — as Australia scrambles to meet the demand for eggs.

Dozens of NT families have lined up to start their own backyard chook farms and ensure eggs will never be in short supply.

The chickens, trucked from the south all the way up to Darwin, are the same breed used in egg farms and can lay 300 a year.

South Australian farmer Darren Letton said the chooks are about 16 weeks of age, and were kept comfortable on the road in the refrigerated truck.
