Russian authorities have decided to tighten controls on the approaches to the Crimean Bridge in anticipation of the New Year holidays, according to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Transport.
To strengthen controls on the approaches to the bridge, 212 checkpoints will be set up from December 26 to January 11, 80 of which will be equipped for manual inspection. This will allow for the inspection of up to 17,500 vehicles per day.
Russian officials clarified that the inspection infrastructure on the approaches to the bridge can handle up to 1,100 vehicles per hour: 650 from Taman and 500 from Kerch. The average inspection time for a passenger car is about 7 minutes, for a bus – up to 15 minutes.
As a reminder, in November, Russian authorities banned electric and hybrid vehicles from crossing the Kerch Bridge from the Krasnodar Krai side. This was in response to recommendations from the Russian Anti-Terrorism Commission. The Association for the Reintegration of Crimea claims that from the Russian side to the occupied Crimea minibuses with the seats removed, which effectively function as freight vehicles on paper, are not being allowed through. Along with this, earlier passage through the illegal crossing for freight transport was restricted. On October 31, the Krasnodar Krai press service told the Russian state agency TASS that the ban on passage for electric cars and hybrid vehicles across the bridge from the Taman side is related to ‘recommendations of the counter-terrorism commission’.

In the context of the holidays, the authorities emphasize the importance of the crossing’s safety and adherence to the new rules on the peninsula’s key transport artery.
Recall, on on July Ukraine’s Security Service has successfully carried out a months-long covert operation that struck the Crimean Bridge for a third time—this time with a precision underwater explosion. The operation, planned and executed in total secrecy, targeted the illegal structure’s underwater foundations, rendering the bridge—used by Russia as a vital military logistics route—in a critically damaged state.
Lieutenant General Vasyl Maliuk, head of the SBU, personally oversaw the operation from start to finish. “God loves a trinity, and the SBU always finishes what it starts and never repeats itself,” Maliuk said. “We hit the Crimean Bridge twice before, in 2022 and 2023. We continued that tradition—this time, from below the surface.”
