Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky has said that any attempt by Vladimir Putin to fully seize eastern Donbas region would come at an enormous human cost for the Kremlin. In his words, Russia could lose anywhere between 300,000 and one million troops to secure Donbass’ full capture. Zelenskiy also made it clear that Ukrainian forces have no intention of pulling back from the area. Speaking in an interview with the podcast The Rest Is Politics, Zelensky argued that Russian forces are already suffering heavy casualties and lack sufficiently trained personnel. According to him, Moscow is therefore looking for a way to present an outcome that appears like a victory without sustaining further massive losses. He suggested that this is why the Kremlin is trying to achieve its goals through diplomatic channels, particularly by engaging the United States, rather than relying solely on the battlefield. Fully capturing Donbas, he said, would require an extended and extremely costly campaign – something that would be difficult to justify even for Putin. Zelensky also warned that Russia is attempting to pressure Ukraine into withdrawing from Donbas because such a move could fracture national unity. If internal divisions were to emerge, he cautioned, Moscow could exploit them – either by launching a rapid offensive or by using any pause in fighting to rebuild its forces, train new troops, expand its defense industry, and push for sanctions relief. He emphasized that a ceasefire based on maintaining current positions would not only serve Ukraine’s interests but also align with those of its international partners. At the same time, Zelensky expressed confidence that Putin understands a full occupation of Ukraine is unattainable, suggesting that the Russian leader’s public messaging to foreign partners does not always reflect his real calculations. In a separate interview, Zelensky reiterated that withdrawing Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk region cannot be seen as a compromise, arguing that it would only open the door for Russia to advance further into other key areas such as Kharkiv and Dnipro regions. Donbass that is comprised of Donetsk and Luhansk regions have long been the focal point of hostilities, with Russian troops attempting to advance through heavily contested areas while relying on artillery, drones, and guided aerial bombs to wear down Ukrainian defenses. Ukrainian troops, for their part, are focused on holding defensive lines, repelling assaults, and preventing deeper breakthroughs. Much of the fighting is characterized by attritional warfare, with small territorial gains often coming at a high cost. Towns and villages near the front have been repeatedly targeted, leaving infrastructure heavily damaged and complicating logistics for both sides.
