As reported since late December 2025, large-scale protests have been taking place in many cities across Iran. The demonstrations in the country, which has been under sanctions for over 40 years, erupted after a sharp decline in the value of the national currency and the onset of another financial crisis.
Protesters are not only protesting the rising cost of living but also calling for the overthrow of the ruling system and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. As Iran International, an opposition resource to the Iranian government, notes , for the first time in five decades, slogans supporting the return of the Pahlavi monarchy have begun to appear frequently in public spaces.
These protests have become the largest in Iran since 2022, when crowds of people demonstrated following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini , who was detained for wearing a hijab "incorrectly." Media reports indicate that security forces are acting more harshly in smaller towns and more cautiously in larger cities, but casualties and mass arrests have already been recorded.
In some places, demonstrations escalated into clashes with security forces. According to Iran International, in several cities, including Nourabad in Lorestan and Hamadan in western Iran, state security forces used live ammunition against demonstrators. Iranian state television reported the arrests of individuals accused of making Molotov cocktails and homemade pistols. Protests continue: protesters take to the streets in several cities, opposition slogans appear on walls in Tehran, and merchants in the capital call for a protest on Sunday. A statement from the merchants stated that the planned protest is part of what they call a "nationwide movement for freedom, justice, and dignity." They called for continued action, along with the public, until their goals are achieved.
Protests driven by economic factors are more common than protests driven by sociocultural issues, such as the 2022–2023 protest movement following the death of Mahsa Amini. According to Iran Human Rights, 551 people were killed in protests by September 15, 2023 alone.
“Now people think: if they keep killing us even when we don’t go out on the streets to protest, then why the hell are we waiting for the right moment?”, 19-year-old computer science student from Tehran told The Guardian anonymously .
Another 20-year-old university student who participated in the protests told British journalists how plainclothes police officers and Basij militants, a volunteer paramilitary group, stormed his dormitory on New Year’s Eve. They began interrogating and beating students, trying to find out who was leading the protests. Since then, many classes have been moved online.
“Participating in these protests could destroy our future, but we have realized that under this regime we have no future, so why be cowardly and hide now?”, said the young man, who asked not to be named.
The United Students Telegram channel published a video showing students chanting "Death to the dictator."
The National Committee of Resistance of Iran reports slogans such as "Death to the dictator" and "Death to Khamenei" not only in Tehran but also in other provinces such as Alborz, Bakhtiari and Shiraz.
