The world’s media are actively discussing the words of the Russian leader, politicians, and Kremlin-loyal propagandists: if Putin does not take urgent economic and political measures, Russia will face the same fate in the fall as it did in 1917 – a brutal civil war and the collapse of the country, writes The Times. In recent days, there has been a flurry of messages on several levels: from the words of the communist leader Gennady Zyuganov , spoken from the rostrum of the State Duma, to the propagandists of Vladimir Solovyov’s pool.
The speech was prompted by a controversial video by Monaco blogger Victoria Boni: 18 minutes of criticism of the government, which garnered 30 million views in a week. She claimed that the people were afraid of her, and that officials were hiding real problems from the president. Russian Kremlin expert Tatyana Stanovaya writes that "an aging and distant Putin" risks losing control amid internal divisions, including online repression. "He can neither establish peace with Ukraine nor win the war. A weak Putin is of no use to anyone, including the security forces," she quotes from her essay for the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Centre. The veteran leader of Russia’s Communist Party has warned parliament that the country’s faltering economy risks stoking a 1917-style revolution and that the government needs to take urgent measures to correct its course. Gennady Zyuganov, 81, issued his warning to a plenary session of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, ahead of a parliamentary election due in September, according to a recording of his speech posted on the Duma’s official website. "We’re doing everything we can to support President Vladimir Putin and his strategy and policies, but you the government are not listening," he said, in comments made. They drew some applause and were carefully listened to by Vyacheslav Volodin, the Duma speaker and a close Putin ally. Zyuganov said a recent government meeting convened by Putin had been the gloomiest in a long time. "If the government does not urgently adopt financial, economic and other measures, by autumn a repeat of what happened in 1917 awaits us. We don’t have the right to repeat that. Let’s take some decisions." Despite his warning, there is currently no sign of serious social unrest in Russia, amid tight wartime censorship, protest bans, long jail sentences for dissidents and the growth in influence of the Federal Security Service, the main successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB.
The historical collapse of Imperial Russia in 1917 resulted from a critical breakdown in communication between the throne and society. Nicholas II, relying on notions of monarchy, lost touch with reality, creating a vacuum of legitimacy. When the administrative vertical ceased to adequately respond to the demands of the population and the elite, an institutional collapse occurred, leading to the disintegration of statehood and civil war. All of this occurred against the backdrop of Russia’s involvement in the protracted First World War. Today’s risks of a recurrence are linked to a similar narrowing of feedback channels and the concentration of power within a closed system. A parallel can be seen in the development of ideological isolation, where management decisions are made based on the internal logic of the system rather than on actual social processes. Given this autonomy of power from society, any large-scale crisis could trigger a sharp loss of control, turning accumulated social alienation into a factor of systemic disintegration.
