The Tuapse Oil Refinery, Russia’s major oil-processing facility on the Black Sea that is run by Rosneft, has been engulfed in flames for nearly a week after being struck twice by Ukrainian drones. The initial strike on April 16 damaged three storage tanks containing petroleum products. While emergency crews were still working to contain the fire, a second drone attack hit the facility on April 20. Authorities in Russia’s Krasnodar region said the attack left one person dead and injured two others. Ukraine’s General Staff later acknowledged the strike on the refinery near the port, saying the attack hit the fuel storage area and triggered a major fire across the site.
Reports indicate the latest damage may have surpassed that caused by the earlier attack. Thick smoke from the burning fuel reportedly drifted hundreds of kilometers along the Black Sea coastline, with residents in nearby towns able to see the smoke. Satellite images also appeared to show the plume extending as far as Stavropol.
Since the start of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, the refinery has repeatedly become a target of Ukrainian long-range drone strikes aimed at disrupting Russia’s fuel and energy infrastructure. Several attacks have caused fires, damage to fuel storage tanks, and temporary disruptions to refinery operations.
Ukrainian forces are said to have targeted the refinery at least nine separate times. Due to its strategic location and role in fuel exports, the refinery remains a high-profile target in the ongoing war.
