Iran has announced that it has destroyed two more U.S.-owned drones on Qeshm Island. According to information released by the Iranian side, Iran’s air defense missile systems shot down two MQ-9 Reaper reconnaissance-strike unmanned aerial vehicles belonging to the U.S. Air Force over Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday. "Iran’s IRGC Navy air defense shot down a US-made MQ-9 drone last night over Qeshm Island," said state-affiliated media Press TV said on social media while sharing a video. The clip shows a drone being hit and crashing as it burst into flames. Iranian officials stated that the total number of destroyed MQ-9 Reapers has reached 19, although visual confirmation only shows 13 drones being shot down. The cost of a single MQ-9 Reaper drone is approximately $30 million. Earlier in the week, Iranian authorities stated that they had downed two MQ-9 drones and released accompanying video footage to support the claim. According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the long-range unmanned aircraft were detected and then “intercepted and destroyed” using what it described as a sophisticated air defense system integrated into Iran’s wider air defense network. Iranian domestic media also circulated a video purporting to show the incident, describing it as capturing “the moment of impact and explosion of two MQ-9 drones in the airspace over Isfahan last night.”
