Israel strikes Beirut as Khamenei escalates Hormuz threat | World News Tonight

Israeli bombs have struck central Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Iran’s state broadcaster has published a statement allegedly written by the country’s new supreme leader. In it, Mojtaba Khamenei says Iran should continue blocking the Strait of Hormuz as a form of leverage.

Poland has repelled a cyberattack on its nuclear research facilities, Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski announced on Thursday. According to the minister, the attack may have originated from Iran. The incident comes as Warsaw seeks to distance itself from the Middle East conflict.

President Karol Nawrocki has announced he will veto legislation that would allow Poland to tap more than €40 billion in European Union defense loans. The president had earlier proposed replacing the Security Action for Europe loan with funds from Poland’s gold reserves. The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk argues the plan is unworkable and would delay urgent military purchases. It also says the veto will not derail the SAFE loan, but would only limit its use in Poland.
