The brother of a Cuban man lured to the Russian army has recorded an emotional video in which he denounced the disappearance of hundreds of Cubans in Russia’s war in Ukraine and the lack of response from the Russian and Cuban governments. “We don’t need money. We don’t need anything. We need our loved ones. Or at least the bodies of our loved ones,” the brother of Yoan Viondi Mendoza said in a video address. The man explained that Yoan went to Russia to earn money but was lured into the war after which he went missing. Almost a year since disappearance, Yoan’s family has yet to hear about his fate. The man slammed the Cuban authorities for what he described as not caring about the fate of its citizens. The man also threw insults at Russian President Vladimir Putin, blaming him for his brother’s tragic fate. The video has been re-shared by the Ukraine-based “I Want to Live” project that offers a helpline for receiving appeals from Russian servicemen. In its Telegram channel, the organization explained that Yoan Viondi Mendoza signed a contract with the Russian Armed Forces on January 15, 2024. He was assigned to the 57th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment of the 20th Guards Motor Rifle Division and is listed as killed on May 12, 2025. The organization explained that the survival rate of foreign mercenaries in the Russian army is extremely low, stressing that Yoan actually stayed in the war longer than usual as most “legionnaires” die within the first four months of service. Furthermore, the organization said the Cuban authorities are ignoring the recruitment of their citizens by Russia into a foreign war in order to demonstrate loyalty to the Kremlin. The Russian side simply ignores all inquiries – it pays no compensation and does not say what happened to the missing. Preliminary estimates suggest the total number of Cuban citizens recruited may reach up to 20,000. Other foreign mercenaries include thousands of personnel from North Korea and various Central Asian states, while overall figures for foreign fighters across all nationalities remain estimates without official confirmation.
