Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Friday against “excessive expectations” linked to peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul.
According to Associated Press the statement follows increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose sanctions on Moscow if progress towards a peace deal doesn’t happen before Aug. 8.
“Any disappointments arise from excessive expectations,” Putin told the press during a sit-down with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
The informal meeting saw the two men relaxing at the 14th-century Valaam monastery in northwest Russia alongside Lukashenko’s pet dog.
He did not mention Trump by name.
He also stressed that he still saw the Istanbul talks as valuable, despite a lack of progress between the two sides.
“How can anyone not see the fact that hundreds of people have returned to their homeland as a positive?” Putin said, referring to the large-scale prisoner exchanges agreed by both sides during talks.
Putin also said that Russian forces had seized the Ukrainian city of Chasiv Yar several days ago, despite Ukrainian denials.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had taken control of all of the city on Thursday morning.
"The Defense Ministry announced it yesterday, but Chasiv Yar was taken several days ago,” Putin said, adding that Ukrainian forces were “probably carrying out counterattacks.”
Putin also said that Russia has started production of its newest hypersonic missiles and reaffirmed its plans to deploy them to ally Belarus later this year.
