A large-scale investigation by "Proekt " revealed that the Russian elite is, in fact, far from participating in the war against Ukraine, contrary to the Kremlin dictator’s claims. Of more than a thousand people connected to the government and big business, only 1% have relatives who actually served at the front. Moreover, only three of them lost loved ones. According to the investigation, the son of Artem Zhogi, the plenipotentiary representative to the Urals Federal District, died in the fighting near Volnovakha in 2022. The nephew of Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov was also killed near Severodonetsk, while Maria Kostyuk, the governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region, made a career out of the tragedy of her son, who died in Ukraine.
Relatives of several State Duma deputies and senators did indeed participate in the so-called "special operation," but most of them served far from the front lines . For example, Anton, the son of deputy Dmitry Sablin, fought in a unit created by his father specifically for members of the Moscow elite. The son of another United Russia member, Viktor Vodolatsky, held a cabinet position in a rear battalion. Some war veterans volunteered not out of conscience, but out of necessity. For example, the cousin of deputy Andrei Gurulev went to the front after a criminal case was opened against him. And the wife of deputy Oleg Kolesnikov decided to "support her husband" by volunteering, although she soon returned home. Even in the Federation Council, there were only two senators with relatives who had participated in the war: Suleiman Geremeyev and Artem Malashchenkov, but even in their cases, we are talking more about demonstrative steps. The investigation places particular emphasis on the hypocrisy of Kremlin propaganda. Vladimir Putin has repeatedly claimed that "veterans of the Central Military District" are the true elite, who can be trusted with Russia’s future. But the facts show that neither Putin himself nor his entourage are willing to pay with the blood of their children for the war unleashed by the Kremlin . In reality, ordinary soldiers from the provinces are dying for the interests of Russian oligarchs, while many children and relatives of officials continue to live abroad and conduct business in Europe. Putin’s "elite" prefers to watch the war from afar, while the country’s population is dwindling due to criminal policies. In this context, Putin’s lies about the Russian elite are met with discontent among ordinary Russians. It is expected that this situation will increase the level of protests against the government in the country.
