A Russian Sukhoi Su-30 crashed on Friday in the Crimea Peninsula while carrying out a routine training flight, according to reporting from the state news agency TASS, which cited information from Russia’s defense authorities. Both pilots managed to escape safely from the aircraft by ejecting before impact and were reported to have survived without injuries. The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed that the aircraft was not carrying any weapons at the time of the incident. Emergency response units were quickly deployed to the crash site, and rescue teams successfully located and evacuated the crew shortly after the event. Officials emphasized that the pilots were unharmed. At this stage, the reason for the crash has not been established. Authorities are continuing an active investigation to determine what led to the incident. This was not the first incident involving a Russian aircraft in Russia-annexed Crimea Peninsula. Earlier on March 31, an An-26 military transport plane crashed in the peninsula, killing seven members and 22 passengers on boards. The aircraft crashed into a cliff, a technical malfunction was identified as a preliminary cause of the crash. Among the killed persons was Aleksandr Otroshchenko, lieutenant general and commander of the Northern Fleet’s Mixed Aviation Corps, who became the 14th Russian general to lose his life since the start of Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Officials said there were no signs of outside impact on the aircraft, suggesting that factors such as missiles, drones, or bird strikes were not considered responsible. The wreckage was later located during a search-and-rescue operation. The An-26, a model developed during the Soviet era, is primarily used for military purposes, typically transporting cargo along with a limited number of passengers across short to medium distances. It is produced by the Ukrainian aerospace firm Antonov. It should be noted that the Crimea Peninsula was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.
