The Defense Forces have been actively clearing Russian air defenses over Crimea in recent years, which has now allowed Ukrainian weapons to operate more freely in the region. This opinion was expressed by Evgeny Diky, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war, former company commander of the Aidar battalion, and director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center on Radio NV. "We’re practicing a lot of things in occupied Crimea, which are then scaled up to the territory of the country that occupied it. Crimea is conveniently located—it’s right next door, and you can fly to it not from just one direction, but from several different directions simultaneously. This makes it very difficult for the Russians to intercept. We’re practicing a lot in Crimea, and then scaling it up to the Russian Federation," Dikyi said. He added that the Defense Forces destroyed a large number of Russian air defense systems in Crimea, and this was one of the reasons for the shortage of such systems among the Russians. "We’ve opened up the skies over Crimea. We started by clearing out specific corridors through which something was flying. Now we’ve cleared the air defenses over the peninsula so completely that we’ve simply opened up the skies. They’re now almost completely accessible to our drones and missiles. The lid has been lifted, and we’re beginning to systematically burn out everything stored under that lid," Diky added. The expert noted that the Defense Forces had begun destroying targets there, starting with the Black Sea Fleet, which is sacred to Moscow. At the same time, he noted the Defense Forces’ approach, which did not result in the sinking of Russian ships. "Sinking a ship isn’t always a blessing. Unfortunately, they have to be sunk when there’s no other way. But then, after the war, we have to deal with all the environmental consequences. And when a ship is afloat, but a pile of scrap metal, incapable of sailing, much less launching missiles, that’s the ideal situation for us. It doesn’t harm us and is retired as an active combat unit," Diky noted. As a reminder, in recent days, the Defense Forces have launched several strikes against Russian ships in temporarily occupied Crimea. Specifically, on the night of April 19, two large landing ships, the Project 775 Yamal and the Project 1171 Nikolai Filchenkov, were hit. As Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk noted, Russia deployed these ships to the Black Sea on the eve of a full-scale invasion, planning to use them for landings, particularly in the Odesa region. Overall, he stated, Moscow planned to increase the total number of such ships in the Black Sea to 13. Yevgeny Dyky trecalled that Ukrainian drones have begun striking targets in the Russian Urals, where Russia’s main military production facilities are located. "Considering the state of Russia’s air defenses in the fifth year of the Great War, when we’re systematically withdrawing them and they’re already faced with the task of covering Valdai, it’s impossible to expect them to find enough air defenses to cover the Ural factories. Just a year ago, they only had enough to cover the front line, Moscow, and Crimea. And all this year, very systematic work has been underway to ensure that this air defense system is in place," Diky explained.
