FP-1 or FirePoint-1 and RS-1 "Bars" drones were used to strike targets in the Moscow region . The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces also mentioned a previously unknown type of drone – the BARS-SM Gladiator. Business Insider reported on what is known about these UAVs. Specifically, according to a report from the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on May 16 and the night of May 17, units of the Defense Forces struck several key military installations in Russia. As the publication notes, Ukraine is increasingly demonstrating the effectiveness of new and relatively inexpensive long-range weapons by intensifying strikes deep into Russian territory, particularly in Moscow. At the same time, the Russian capital boasts the densest air defense system in the country. "The attacks were part of a massive wave of strikes across Russia over the weekend. Russian authorities reported at least four deaths, three of which were in the Moscow region. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Sunday evening that the ‘massive attack’ involved more than 120 drones – the largest number of drones recorded in the region in a single day," the analysts said. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, among the damaged facilities were a microchip manufacturing plant approximately 30 kilometers from the center of Moscow and a large oil pumping station approximately 50 kilometers from the Russian capital. The publication noted that the least public information currently exists about the BARS-SM Gladiator. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine did not respond to Business Insider’s inquiries regarding the details of the attacks and the characteristics of the three drone types. However, the name itself may indicate a connection between the Gladiator and the RS-1 Bars. Analysts recalled that the RS-1 Bars was unveiled in the spring of 2025 as a hybrid cruise missile and a jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle. This drone is designed for mass production and is capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 800 kilometers, carrying 45 to 90 kilograms of explosives. Ukraine has not disclosed the manufacturer of the RS-1 Bars, but it has been reported that the drone was developed by private companies. Much more is known about the FP-1 Firepoint, an aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle that entered production in late 2024 for long-range strikes over 1,400 kilometers. The FP-1, which resembles a small airplane, was developed by the Ukrainian company Fire Point. It can carry up to 120 kilograms of explosives. The jet drone is launched without a runway – it takes off using a rocket booster from a rail installation. In December, the BBC reported that the cost of one FP-1 is about $50,000, and production reaches at least 200 units per day. Like the RS-1 Bars, this drone effectively occupies a position between a cruise missile and a kamikaze drone, although it moves significantly slower than traditional cruise missiles. The claimed range of both drones significantly exceeds the distance between Ukraine and Moscow, which is approximately 480 kilometers. To strike Moscow, Ukrainian drones had to overcome Russia’s multi-layered air defense system. This includes two belts of long-range S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft systems. In addition, the Russian capital is protected by numerous electronic warfare systems, as well as dozens of short-range missile systems, including the Pantsir and Tor. On the eve of the Victory Day parade, OSINT analysts reported that satellite imagery had captured more than 100 air defense systems deployed within a radius of approximately 110 kilometers from the center of Moscow. Several popular Russian Telegram channels have published videos that may confirm the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s claims of successful strikes. One of the most widely shared videos, published by the ASTRA channel, shows a massive fire at the Elma technology park in Zelenograd, a district of Moscow home to the Angstrem plant, which produces electronics for precision weapons. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine had struck a number of targets both in Russia and in occupied Ukrainian territories, including Crimea. This attack was a response to one of Russia’s largest air campaigns of the war. According to Zelenskyy, in just two days, Russia launched more than 1,500 drones at Ukrainian cities.
