The recent destruction of a Kalibr-class carrier in Primorsk, Russia, has a certain mystical quality, as this Karakurt-class ship was built for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and the occupiers withdrew it from Crimea to save it. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmitry Pletenchuk explained this during a telethon broadcast. "In general, all Russian fleets have similar ships. But the story of the carrier that was hit in the north is interesting because, in fact, one could say it suffered the ‘Black Sea curse’ even beyond the Black Sea-Azov region. This ship was intended for the Black Sea Fleet," Pletenchuk explained. The ship in question belongs to the Karakurt project, five of which were built specifically for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the military officer added. Among them were the Askold, which was seriously damaged in Kerch, and the Cyclone, which was destroyed in Sevastopol Bay. Another ship was being completed, and the occupiers withdrew two from Crimea to the Caspian Sea. As experience has shown, this particular type of missile is no longer, as of today, the effective weapon it was at the beginning of a full-scale invasion," the Navy spokesman noted. As a reminder, on the night of May 3, the Defense Forces struck a small Karakurt-class missile ship in the port of Primorsk in the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation. On board were a launcher and eight Kalibr cruise missiles.
The affected targets are located approximately 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine’s northern border. The 67-meter-long ship was also equipped with a sea-based Pantsir-M anti-aircraft missile and gun system. "The Karakurt, designed for naval combat in coastal zones or on the open sea, was intended to protect infrastructure and the oil terminal from Ukrainian drones," the Special Operations Forces explained. They added that the damaged Primorsk oil terminal, owned by the Russian state-owned company Transneft, is the largest in the Baltic Sea. All pipelines in northwestern Russia converge on it, from where oil and gas products are exported by the shadow fleet. "The destruction of the enemy’s maritime and oil and gas infrastructure reduces its economic and logistical capabilities to wage war against Ukraine, as well as to circumvent international sanctions and replenish its budget. The Special Operations Forces continue asymmetrical actions to strategically weaken the enemy in its war against Ukraine," the statement noted.
