A deadly explosion involving a fuel tanker shook Panama City on Monday, leaving one person dead and several others hurt, officials confirmed.
The blast happened in the La Boca district, close to the Panama Oil Terminals facility and under the Bridge of the Americas. According to reports, the explosion occurred while a tanker was being refueled, sparking a large fire that quickly spread to two nearby tanker trucks. Thick plumes of smoke filled the area, followed by several smaller explosions. Fire chief Victor Raul Alvarez Villalobos stated that one individual lost their life. Two people sustained second-degree burns, while two firefighters suffered from smoke inhalation. Emergency crews managed to contain the fire, and those injured are reported to be in stable condition. Authorities are set to launch an investigation into the cause of the explosion on Tuesday. Following the incident, officials shut down the bridge as a precaution. Structural inspections will be carried out, and the bridge will stay closed until safety assessments are completed.
